This conference proposes a dialogue between research conducted in Brazil and Canada on professional education and development, professional experiences, and the contemporary challenges faced by teachers, school principals, and school leadership teams. Drawing on different educational contexts; Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Montreal; we seek to understand how educational policies, institutional cultures, professional trajectories, and intercultural relations shape the ways in which educators teach, learn, lead, and develop responses to diversity within schools. The conference seeks to move beyond a perspective focused exclusively on policies or institutional structures and instead turn attention to the individuals who, in their everyday work in schools, interpret, negotiate, and develop responses to educational transformations. Teacher and school leader education, interculturality, diversity, inclusion, professional autonomy, and democratic school management thus become interconnected dimensions of a dialogue across different experiences. Rather than simply comparing educational systems, we propose to understand how different contexts produce situated ways of addressing diversity, institutional demands, and the challenges of school leadership and professional education. In doing so, we aim to highlight possibilities for building schools that are more inclusive, participatory, and democratic.
